Shmorévaz welcomes Bonny Poon / Conditions (Toronto, CA) for Mono Mania.
Mono Mania emerged from the unlikely combination of Riot Grrrrl—a DIY music movement, associated with punk and third wave feminism, coming out of Olympia, Washington in the 1990s—and Monochromes—a type of artistic work characterized by a single plane of colour, predisposed to certain ideological readings within the history of 20th century abstract painting, relating to purity, perception, end games, visibility, and value. Mono doubles as shorthand for the viral illness, infectious mononucleosis—widely dubbed “the kissing disease.” Symptoms include extreme fatigue, fever, sore throat, body aches, and rash. It also refers to monophonic sound in music: audio fed through a single channel.
Mono Mania is a two-part exhibition opening on October 20, from 5 to 9 pm at Shmorévaz, featuring a performance and reading program curated by Juliette Desorgues. A second session takes place at Le Scott’s Bar (7 rue Delambre, Paris) — an operational bar since the 1920s, frequented by writers and artists such as Hemingway, Sartre, and Beauvoir, owned and run by the same family of women for more than five decades — on Thursday, October 23.
