Since 2021, photographer Rebekka Deubner has been meeting, following, and documenting users of thermal contraception (also called “testicular” contraception). Raising questions about intimacy, masculinity, gendered mental burdens, and parenthood, this practice first emerged in France in the 1980s to address a neglected public health issue, both individually and collectively. saisons thermiques looks at thermal contraception as an entry point for rethinking our models of relationships and representation. The project unfolds across diverse contexts, encounters, and image typologies — from a performance by artist-choreographer Pau Simon, to the activities of the collective 13ticules at Marseilles’ Planned Parenthood, to the creation of DIY contraceptive tools. Alternating between scenes of collective life, intimate moments, and portraits of men practicing contraception, Deubner’s saisons thermiques reasserts the body as a site of political expression and activism.

Rebekka Deubner is a visual artist and photographer, born in 1989 in Germany. She lives and works in the Île-de-France region, combining personal practice, press and commercial photography, and teaching. Her work reflects her inquiries into human and non-human bodies, their lineages, and interdependencies. Whether exploring intimately political practices such as testicular contraception, personal mourning, tensions around water use in the Deux-Sèvres region, or the triple disaster in Fukushima Prefecture, she focuses on the gestures, materiality, and surfaces that make up these ecosystems.
